Vinyl siding installation and replacement in Grand Rapids

Vinyl costs the least of the common sidings to put on a house, and after that it asks for a wash now and then, not a paint crew. NAHB's lifespan study expects it to last as long as the house does.

Two standards worth asking about

Vinyl panels are made to ASTM D3679, a specification that tests things like impact strength, heat shrinkage, weathering and resistance to wind load. The Vinyl Siding Institute certifies products against it through independent certification bodies, and certified products appear in listings kept by Intertek, ICC-ES and IAPMO, so a certification claim can be checked.

Installing has a standard as well, ASTM D4756. The institute's Certified Installer program is built on it and asks installers to recertify every three years.

Re-siding a Grand Rapids house

In Grand Rapids, 76 percent of homes were built before 1980, according to the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey. Whether the old siding comes off or the new goes over it is the first question to settle, and on any house built before 1978, work that disturbs painted surfaces falls under the EPA's lead renovation rule and has to be done by a certified firm.

Why the nailing matters

Vinyl grows and shrinks with the temperature. Panels hung so they can slide on their nails ride that out; panels nailed tight can buckle. You will not see it on the quote, which is why the installer's training is worth asking about.

Where the price comes from

  • How much wall there is, and how many stories.
  • Which grade and profile of panel.
  • Corners, windows and doors, each of which means trim.
  • Tearing off the old siding, or going over it.

Before you sign

  • Is this product in a VSI certification listing?

Common questions

Is a permit needed to re-side a house in Grand Rapids?
It depends on the job and the rules are the city's. Replacing siding on its own can be treated differently from a job that also changes insulation, sheathing or window openings. The contractor should check with the city, pull any permit that is needed, and say on the quote whether one is.
Does homeowner's insurance pay for storm damage?
Hail and wind damage are often covered, less the deductible, but damage that is only cosmetic may not be, and policies differ. The adjuster works from the contractor's written estimate, so experience with insurance claims is worth asking about.
How long will the job take?
Ask for a schedule in the quote. The size of the house, the material and the weather all move it, and siding is not hung in the rain.
Which siding should I pick?
Vinyl costs least and is the simplest to repair. Fiber cement costs more, weighs more and is painted. Engineered wood lands in between. NAHB's lifespan study expects all three to last as long as the house, which leaves looks, budget and upkeep to decide it. Get each manufacturer's warranty in writing.
